Totus Tuus

"Totus Tuus" was the apostolic motto of Pope John Paul II. It is a Latin phrase which means "totally thine", and reflects his devotion to Mary, the Mother of Jesus. This hymn is the school song of Peoria Notre Dame High School in Peoria, Illinois. The band director, Ms. Amanda Connon, is one of my long-time friends and colleagues. I was deeply honored when she commissioned me to score the hymn for her band, and at her request included a larger-than-normal number of percussion parts. The arrangement was completed in late 2015. The piece can be performed exclusively by the band only, or the final stanza can be sung by the choir (or congregation) while the band plays. Grade 3.

The text is as follows:

Totus tuus ego sum, et omnia mea tua sunt. Accipio te in mea omnia. Praebe mihi cor tuum, Maria.

Translated, it reads "I belong entirely to you, and all that I have is yours. I take you for my all. O Mary, give me your heart."
